Papuan armed groups are hunted following the killing of bridge project workers

The Papua Regional Police said it was pursuing a Papuan armed group led by Egianus Kogoya following the killing of a number of migrant workers who were working on a bridge construction project.

A joint team of TNI / Polri who arrived in Mbuma, near the scene of the attack in the Yigi district on Tuesday (04/12) met four workers who managed to escape.

Of the four people, two of them were injured.

"The KKB group attacked the TNI post with the support of approximately 250 people, while the four people who managed to escape were being evacuated to Wamena and the medical team had picked up around Habema," the Papua Police said in a written statement on Tuesday ( 12/12).

The four were Martinus Sampe, who suffered gunshot wounds to his left leg, Jefrianto with gunshot wounds to his left temple and Irawan and John. They were taken to Wamena.

Martinus and Jefrianto were PT Istaka Karya migrant workers who participated in the construction of the bridge, which was part of the construction of Trans Papua at that location while Irawan was a Telkomsel employee and a Puskesmas officer John.

The police are currently pursuing the armed criminal group.

Meanwhile the Antara news agency quoted the Korem commander in Jayapura, Colonel Binsar Sianipar, who said 19 workers were confirmed dead.

Binsar said that the information was obtained from Aritonang, another employee at PT Istaka Karya who managed to save himself and is currently in Wamena.

Previously, a spokesman for the Cendrawasih Regional Military Command said they received reports of migrant workers killed by the KKB.

"We are now trying to approach the location, but the report we received says there are 24 to 31 migrant workers killed by armed criminal groups (KKB)," said spokesman for Cenderawasih Kodam XVII, Infantry Colonel Muhammad Aidi, to Heyder Affan from BBC News Indonesia , Tuesday (04/12) morning.

Not a criminal but a rebel

Minister of Defense and Security Ryamizard Ryacudu said, the culprit was "not a criminal group but a rebel."

President Joko Widodo said that he had ordered the National Police Chief and TNI Commander to the location.

"I have ordered the TNI and Kapolri Commander to go there, to be seen first, so it is not just suspected, because this is still confusing. This is still confirmed, how it happened," Jokowi told reporters.

"But we know, development in Papua, the terrain is very difficult and also there are still security disturbances," the president added.

He also reminded that the incident occurred in a remote district. "The district used to be 'red in color,' I've been there," Jokowi continued.

KKB is a term used by the Indonesian Police and the TNI to refer to armed groups, some of whom demand secession from Indonesia.

While Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono said, related to the incident the government temporarily stopped the construction of bridges at that location.

"With this incident, we stopped all the bridge works (from Mamugu to Wamena)," Basuki said at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (04/12), as reported by Jerome Wirawan from BBC News Indonesia.

"All construction of bridges on this section, from Mamugu to Wamena, we stopped, until we waited for conducive security in the region, according to the recommendations of the Papua Military Commander and Regional Police Chief," Basuki continued.

While National Police spokesman M Iqbal said officials still had to ascertain the number of people killed.

"The event did happen, but the number is still not confirmed," M Iqbal said at a press conference in Jakarta.

"The infrastructure workers were strafed by the KKB, which resulted in several deaths. And some of the victims were allegedly native Papuans themselves," he continued.

He mentioned that despite various speculations and allegations, the motive for the shooting was unclear.

"We have sent officers to the location, along with TNI officers, to carry out police steps. The first is the rescue and evacuation of victims."

"The second is law enforcement. We will pursue the perpetrators, and take firm action. We have identified a number of groups. We will pursue them everywhere," he said.

Earlier, a spokesman for the Kodam Cendrawasih said, there was information that the shooting was set in the events of December 1.

"From the information we received, the workers photographed their activities, and the people could not accept. And, according to that information, the workers were killed," said Chief of Information of the Cendrawasih XVII Military Area, Infantry Colonel Muhammad Aidi.

So far no group or party has claimed responsibility for this attack.

Previous reports have said that dozens of workers from state-owned company PT Istaka Karya were killed by a group of gunmen.

Mentioned, the victims were working on a project to open up an isolated central mountainous region in Papua Province.

Since Joko Widodo became President, one of the policies most highlighted is infrastructure development in Papua, although there has been resistance from some Papuans who continue to demand secession from Indonesia.
