NATIONAL DAY OF WEST PAPUA MARKED IN PNG CAPITAL

The Papua New Guinea’s capital city came alive today (December 1) at Ela Beach when it joined the World to celebrate, remember, recommit and renew efforts to escalate the West Papua Campaign for independence.

Speaking to thousands who joined the West Papuan community in the city to commemorate their national day, National Capital District, Powes Parkop said they were not just there to celebrate it, but most importantly, is to renew their commitment, because despite the killings, brutality, murder, rape, trauma, and suppression, the Morning Star flag is still flying.

He said they also paid homage to the thousands who have paid the ultimate sacrifice which will not die in vain.

"All over the world this day is being celebrated, honoured, respected and used as a platform to escalate this worthy cause for the freedom of West Papua. Denmark, England, Solomon Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Fiji and many other parts of the world have participated in to.

"You are not alone. 57 years of our struggle for independence is too longer, but we should not give up. Our flag is still flying and that is something significant.

"We all must stand united and ride on the back of growing support for West Papua all around the world," he said.

Today, if there was a referendum conducted, almost 98 percent of the West Papuans would choose to be free and independent.

"I can say this with authority because I have visited them in 2016 and our people there told me very clearly. This is what they told me; “Do not let us become just a story.” It is a grand statement. If we continue to be silent, our fellow Melanesians can be decimated to extinction. our people there told me very very clearly. They will become just a story'" he said.

He assured them that he would take the matter again to the attention of government caucus and further to the regional forums and the International Court of Justice.

"I want to say to the Indonesian Government that it will be a greater nation when West Papua is free. Colonising and occupying West Papua has put a dent on Indonesian history and moral standing in the region and in the world.

"To clean that bad history, West Papua should be allowed to be free. Indonesians will be  better people when they are free. They will be true brothers and sisters. We will have a relation better than today when West Papua is free, and we will be prosperous. Our economy and culture people will be integrated when West Papua is free, so today I want to call on Indonesia to be brave and courageous and not let pride and fear dictate your decision and your action. Just let our people go and we can build a better future," said Mr Parkop.
