Indonesia: hundreds of Papuans who showed peace were arrested
In Indonesia hundreds of Papuans and others were arrested who peacefully demonstrated for independence.
"This arbitrary arrest came with a long list of actions by which Papuans were persecuted. Oppression, intimidation, and hostile attacks by many people occurred regularly last year. But instead of arresting the attackers, the police arrested peaceful demonstrators," said Usman Hamid from Amnesty Indonesia.
Independence struggles
Most of the Dutch East Indies were under Indonesian rule in 1945. The western part of the island of New Guinea remained under Dutch control. From 1950, the Dutch authorities prepared for the independence of New Guinea. This is against Indonesian leg pain. It began military operations in 1961, after which the Dutch left the island in 1963.
The Papuans considered December 1, 1961 as the day they should have gained independence. Every day that day is commemorated. On December 1, 2018, at least 537 people were arrested in various places. Counter-demonstrators threw stones, causing sixteen people to be injured.
